Chicago Still & Box Alarm fire 7-22-14
June 06 14:12:33, 2025
On Tuesday evening, around 6:30 PM (July 22nd), the commander of Chicago's 22nd Battalion arrived at the scene of a structure fire in an occupied single-story-and-a-half wooden frame house. The fire seemed to have originated in the back part of the attic and quickly spread throughout most of the attic space. Adjacent to this building was a three-story, multi-family apartment structure made of brick, with wooden porch structures on the third floor, posing significant risk as exposure to the fire. With temperatures soaring and the heat index nearing 100 degrees Fahrenheit, the battalion called for additional support by requesting a Still & Box Alarm just minutes after arriving.
Within moments, heavy smoke began billowing out of the dormer window on one side of the building and flames erupted through the roof directly above it. However, firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control relatively quickly, with the fire visibly diminishing within a short period. In the images provided, you can see Ladder Truck 27 responding to the emergency. This marked the second consecutive evening in the past three days that both Engine 75 and Engine 62 responded to active fires within their respective districts.
Attached are several photos taken by Eric Haak, capturing different stages of the firefighting efforts. One image shows dense smoke rising from the burning house, while another highlights flames breaking through the roof. There’s also a shot of firefighters standing near a ladder truck, clearly exhausted yet determined after battling the intense blaze during the sweltering conditions. Other photos depict the aftermath of the fire, including Engine 75 parked nearby and remnants of the damaged property.
These events underscore the challenges faced by Chicago firefighters, especially during prolonged periods of extreme heat, which can significantly impact operational efficiency and safety.
