2-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 11-23-23
This is from Eric Haak: Just before sunrise on Thanksgiving morning, a fire broke out at the former Wing Hoe restaurant in Chicago’s 9th Battalion. The building, originally constructed as a private home in 1913, had operated as the Wing Hoe since 1971. At the time of the fire, it was vacant and scheduled for demolition. In fact, companies had been working inside the structure just the day before. The building was a two-and-a-half-story brick structure with a basement, where the fire appeared to have started. Engine Company 83 arrived quickly and tried to get a line on the fire before it spread. However, due to holes in the floor and heavy smoke, they were unable to make progress. As a result, they switched to a defensive attack. I arrived as the first alarm was being pulled, and the entire building was already engulfed in thick smoke. Engine Company 59 made an entry through a rear door that provided a safe angle of approach into the basement. They managed to make some headway, but the fire had already extended significantly. Firefighters used a Snorkel, tower ladder, two RAMs, and several hand lines to bring the situation under control. It was a tough call, but the decision to go defensive was the right one given the conditions. The scene was intense, with multiple units responding and working together to contain the fire. The photos captured by Eric show the scale of the operation, including the use of specialized equipment like the ACP-55 Cobra, EONE tower ladder, and Spartan Gladiator. These images give a real sense of the effort and coordination involved in fighting such a challenging fire.
