Wood Dale Fire Protection District history

It's Throwback Thursday, and I've got something special to share from my collection of vintage firefighting photos! This one takes us back to the 1980s in Wood Dale, Illinois, thanks to Larry Shapiro. Here’s a peek at how things used to be with the Wood Dale Fire Protection District. The equipment has come a long way since then, but these classic vehicles hold so much history. Take a look at this former Wood Dale FPD Ambulance 14. It's a perfect example of a vintage Type 1 MICU. Larry Shapiro captured it beautifully in his photo. Next up is Engine 1, which was once part of the fleet. This Ford/Howe fire engine looks like it could still handle any emergency thrown its way, even decades later. Then there’s Engine 11, a classic custom Pirsch rescue engine that was clearly built to last. Its design and build quality were top-notch for its time. Engine 16 also features a stunning custom Pirsch build, showcasing the pride and craftsmanship that went into creating these machines. The Rescue Squad 3 was another vital part of their operation. This Ford/Welch rescue squad vehicle was designed for versatility and efficiency, as seen in Larry’s photo. Finally, we have Truck 10, a classic custom Pirsch ladder truck. Its size and presence would have been impressive on any scene back in the day. Looking at these photos, it’s easy to see why firefighters have such a deep respect for their equipment. Each vehicle tells a story of dedication, service, and innovation. These images remind me of the importance of preserving our past while pushing forward into the future. I hope you enjoyed this trip down memory lane as much as I did putting it together. Let me know what your favorite piece of equipment is in the comments below! #ThrowbackThursday #FirefightingHistory #WoodDaleFPD
