On Tuesday, May 12, 2015, around 1:30 PM, Niles firefighters were dispatched to a residential structure at 8115 Ottawa Avenue. Upon arrival, the first units on scene reported heavy fire and smoke coming from the rear of the two-story home, prompting an immediate upgrade to Code 4, indicating a working fire. A report of someone trapped on the second floor was later confirmed to be false, as the occupant managed to jump from a second-floor window with the help of neighbors and suffered only minor injuries.
The rear access to the home was excellent, thanks to a commercial parking lot located directly behind the property on Milwaukee Avenue. While Niles units prepared to enter through the front, Morton Grove Engine 5 (from North Maine Engine 1) positioned their deck gun from the rear to assist in suppressing the flames.
Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control within 15 minutes. Several mutual aid units responded to the scene, including Glenview Ambulance 7 and Truck 14, Des Plaines Truck 61, Morton Grove Battalion 4, Engine 5, and Squad 4, along with Lincolnwood Ambulance 15, Engine 1, and Ambulance 1 from North Maine. Additional support came from Niles companies, including Engine 2, Engine 3, Truck 2, Battalion 2, Ambulance 2, and Ambulance 3.
Numerous fire apparatus were seen at the scene, including a Pierce Dash CF PUC tower ladder, a Spartan ERV fire engine, and several other engines from local departments. Firefighters worked efficiently to contain the fire, while emergency responders provided medical support and ensured the safety of all involved.
