On Tuesday, May 12, 2015, around 1:30 PM, Niles firefighters were dispatched to a two-story residence at 8115 Ottawa Avenue. Upon arrival, the first units encountered heavy fire and smoke coming from the rear of the home, prompting an immediate upgrade to Code 4, indicating a working fire. A report initially suggested someone was trapped on the second floor, but it was later confirmed that the occupant safely jumped from a window with the help of neighbors, sustaining only minor injuries.
The rear of the house was easily accessible via a commercial parking lot located behind the property on Milwaukee Avenue. While Niles units prepared to enter from the front, Morton Grove Engine 5, supplied by North Maine Engine 1, positioned their deck gun from the rear to assist in controlling the flames.
Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control within 15 minutes. The incident drew significant mutual aid, including Glenview Ambulance 7 and Truck 14, Des Plaines Truck 61, Morton Grove Battalion 4, Engine 5, and Squad 4, along with Lincolnwood Ambulance 15, Engine 1, and Ambulance 1 from North Maine. Additional support came from various Niles companies, including Engine 2, Engine 3, Truck 2, Battalion 2, Ambulance 2, and Ambulance 3.
Numerous fire apparatus were seen on scene, including a Pierce Dash CF PUC tower ladder, a Spartan ERV fire engine, and several other units. Firefighters worked efficiently to contain the fire and ensure the safety of all involved. The area was later cleared, and no further injuries were reported.
