William Yamokoski, the pilot, was still in the emergency room at Northwestern Memorial Hospital as of 5:10 p.m., according to a hospital spokesperson, who said it was unclear whether he would be admitted overnight. Emergency calls were first received around 1:37 p.m. regarding the crash of a single-engine plane near 9500 S. Crilly Drive, close to a Chicago Police heliport, said John Mirabelli, a Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer. According to Joe Roccasalva, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman, the pilot appeared to be a man in his mid-40s or 50s, standing outside the aircraft when crews arrived.
