From the Addison Fire District:
As first responders continue to face evolving challenges, the role of paramedics and firefighters is shifting significantly. In recent years, there’s been a noticeable increase in the use of protective gear like bulletproof vests and ballistic helmets within these teams. This change reflects a heightened awareness of the urgent need to treat victims of violent incidents promptly. Historically, it was standard procedure for law enforcement to secure a scene before paramedics or firefighters could step in to provide medical aid. However, modern task force responses involve coordinated efforts between police officers and emergency medical personnel who jointly enter active scenes to both stabilize victims and ensure their safe evacuation.
The Addison Fire Protection District is taking proactive steps by equipping on-duty paramedics and firefighters with advanced protective gear. This initiative aims to integrate them directly into task force operations during active shooter scenarios, enhancing their safety while performing critical life-saving duties. Recently, the district authorized a budget of $16,283 to acquire these essential supplies, including both vests and helmets. These items will remain stored on emergency vehicles, ensuring they’re always accessible when needed most.
According to Fire Chief Joe Leone, “We can no longer afford to wait passively; our responsibility now extends beyond traditional roles. It’s crucial that we act swiftly alongside police officers to deliver emergency care without delay.†He further emphasized, “By investing in proper training and state-of-the-art equipment, we’re preparing ourselves for what unfortunately has become part of reality today.â€

While this development marks significant progress, Chief Leone reiterated that readiness requires ongoing vigilance and adaptability in response to ever-changing threats.
