Drapes

Also known as curtains, drapes are lightweight barriers placed around the blasting area to direct debris downward into a collection net beneath the operation. This method aims to catch loose particles before they enter the surrounding environment. While cost-effective, drapes are not foolproof. Dust can sometimes seep through the fabric, especially in windy conditions or when airflow disrupts their positioning. Despite these limitations, they remain a budget-friendly option that provides basic protection for workers and the surroundings.

Water Curtains

The water curtain technique involves installing nozzles along the edges of the structure being blasted. These nozzles spray water downward, creating a barrier that catches and redirects debris toward the ground. The mixture of water and abrasive material is then channeled into collection troughs for proper disposal. Water curtains offer an economical solution for reducing harmful emissions while maintaining efficiency in the blasting process.

Wet Blasting

Wet blasting encompasses various methods, such as combining water with abrasives during the blasting process. This approach minimizes dust generation by capturing particles on impact. However, the presence of water might compromise the effectiveness of certain types of surface cleaning compared to traditional dry blasting. To address this issue, retrofit devices can be added to the blast nozzle to enhance performance.

Centrifugal Blasters

Centrifugal blasters utilize a high-speed rotor to propel abrasives onto the surface being cleaned. A collection system ensures that most debris remains contained, minimizing losses. These machines are typically suited for large, flat surfaces like ship decks but are increasingly being adapted into portable handheld models for versatility in applications such as bridge maintenance.
