Rolling Meadows continues to consider plans for fire stations
Recently, I came across an article in The Daily Herald discussing potential changes to the downtown fire station in Rolling Meadows. It seems like the local leaders are at a critical juncture, as they will make a decision in April regarding whether to relocate the existing downtown fire station or invest in repairs or rebuilding efforts. During their latest meeting, the city council reaffirmed their commitment to address this issue after receiving input from Fire Chief Scott Franzgrote. He proposed shifting the downtown station to a new location along New Wilke Road near Central Road, while also suggesting the eventual relocation of the current western station to Hicks Road, between Euclid Avenue and Kirchoff Road. According to Chief Franzgrote, these moves could significantly enhance emergency response times across the city. Although the proposed site on New Wilke Road poses some political challenges due to its proximity to neighboring towns, it remains the sole north-south thoroughfare east of Route 53, stretching from Euclid to Golf Road. Statistics indicate that 85% of the department's calls originate east of Route 53 or directly adjacent to it. Additionally, aid agreements with nearby cities such as Arlington Heights and Palatine factored into the recommendation, given their respective fire station placements. Currently, the downtown station at 3111 Meadows Drive is half a century old and has been described by aldermen as an "embarrassment" to the city. Meanwhile, the west-side station located at 2455 Plum Grove Road, though younger at 33 years, still requires attention. For years now, Rolling Meadows officials have wrestled with how best to handle these aging facilities. In the past, the city secured funding for a third station but ultimately shelved the idea amid financial constraints. This time around, aldermen tasked Chief Franzgrote with developing solutions involving only two stations without increasing personnel costs. After careful consideration, he presented five possible scenarios for station placement, which are available online at ci.rolling-meadows.il.us. Thanks again to Dan for sharing this insightful piece!
