Over the past few weeks, the Countryside Fire Protection District has been hosting a series of training exercises at a location on 27693 Chevy Chase Road in Mundelein. The homeowner generously offered their property for these drills, in exchange for letting the firefighters torch the house to the ground—clearing the way for the construction of a brand-new home. Dan McInerney shared some images on social media, showcasing the impressive new Rosenbauer engine and tender from US Tanker in action.
I had the chance to visit this weekend to see the fire department put the new equipment through its paces. One of the standout pieces is Countryside’s Engine 415, which features a rear-mounted pump, hydraulic ladder rack, and is built on a sturdy 4x4 IHC Workstar chassis. Larry Shapiro captured some fantastic photos of the vehicle, highlighting its impressive design and capabilities. Engine 415 carries 750 gallons of water and boasts a powerful 1,250-GPM pump, ensuring it can handle even the most demanding situations. Tools are cleverly mounted for quick access during emergencies.
The highlight of the day was watching the detached garage go up in flames, eventually collapsing under the intense heat. It was quite the spectacle, with billowing clouds of thick black smoke rising into the sky. Countryside made sure to invite nearby residents, neighboring fire departments, and their families to join in on the action. It wasn’t just about the fire; it was also a great opportunity to educate the public and strengthen community ties.

To ensure there was a constant water supply, neighboring departments pitched in with tankers. Wauconda, Long Grove, and Libertyville all sent units, including Libertyville’s 1988 Pierce Dash, 1250/2500 tanker. Interestingly, Countryside recently gifted this vehicle to Libertyville, and they’ve since re-lettered it for their fleet. Libertyville even brought out their Tender 461, which Countryside originally owned before passing it along earlier this year. It was fascinating to see how the tender was set up to dump water into a portable tank, feeding directly into Countryside Engine 412.
It was truly a memorable event, bringing together fire departments and the community for a day filled with learning, camaraderie, and, of course, some spectacular visuals. A big thanks to everyone involved for making it such a success!
