East Dundee FPD breaks ground for new station

The Courier-News recently published an article about the East Dundee Fire Protection District commencing construction on a brand-new fire station. This development marks a significant milestone for the community, as it represents the culmination of years of planning and anticipation. Mark Guth, who at 13 years old witnessed the original fire station being built on Third Street in downtown East Dundee over six decades ago, had the privilege of attending the groundbreaking ceremony. Now 75, Guth is not only retired from the fire department but also currently serves as the president of the East Dundee Fire Protection District Board of Trustees. Joining him were fellow trustees, village officials, firefighters, and residents eager to celebrate this momentous occasion. Fire Chief Steve Schmitendorf expressed his excitement during the event, stating, "Today's the day, finally. It's something we've dreamed about for a long time." The new station, funded by a successful $5.5 million referendum approved by taxpayers last November, will be strategically located near Routes 25 and 72. According to fire officials, this location provides better coverage for the entire district, extending from Higgins Road all the way to Interstate 90. To ensure fairness, given that the village would receive three acres of land along with a fully constructed building, East Dundee authorities committed to donating $100,000 annually to the fire protection district—a separate taxing entity—for the next 20 years. These contributions aim to help offset bond payments associated with building the new facility. Construction is expected to wrap up within approximately ten months. The fire district covers several areas including East Dundee, South Barrington, Barrington Hills, as well as portions of Kane and Cook Counties.
