Countryside shows off new engine … and entertains many

Over the past few weeks, the Countryside Fire Protection District has been hosting various training exercises at a location on 27693 Chevy Chase Road in Mundelein. The homeowner generously allowed the fire department to use their property for training purposes, with the understanding that the old house would be burned down to clear the way for a new build. I came across some images shared by Dan McInerney showcasing the impressive new Rosenbauer engine and tender from US Tanker in action.
One of the highlights of the event was the burning of both the main house and the detached garage, which was open to the public, including local residents, neighboring fire departments, CERT members, and anyone interested in witnessing large-scale fire operations. Larry Shapiro was among those who attended and managed to capture some stunning photos of the new Rosenbauer Centurion engine against the backdrop of flames. You can check out a gallery of these images, and there’s also a video in the works.
Countryside’s newly acquired Engine 415 is quite the sight, featuring a rear-mounted pump, a hydraulic ladder rack, and built on a sturdy 4x4 IHC Workstar chassis. As seen in Larry Shapiro’s photographs, Engine 415 holds 750 gallons of water and boasts a powerful 1,250-GPM pump. The vehicle is equipped with tools strategically placed for quick access during emergencies. The intense fire that consumed the detached garage eventually led to its collapse, adding an element of realism to the training scenario.
For this event, Wauconda, Long Grove, and Libertyville dispatched tankers to ensure a constant water supply. Interestingly, the tanker provided by Libertyville was actually a 1988 Pierce Dash, 1250/2500 model that Countryside had gifted them earlier. It has since been rebranded with Libertyville’s markings. Additionally, Libertyville’s Tender 461 was set up to transfer water into a portable tank, which was then utilized by Countryside Engine 412. This tender had previously been part of Countryside’s fleet before being transferred to Libertyville earlier this year.
The training exercise wasn’t just about practical drills; it also brought everyone together for a memorable experience. A classic group photo was taken, capturing the spirit of collaboration and camaraderie among the firefighters. Larry Shapiro’s shots, especially one featuring the intense radiant heat and thick black smoke billowing skyward, perfectly encapsulates the raw power of firefighting operations.
Overall, this event served as an excellent opportunity for the Countryside Fire Protection District to enhance its skills while fostering stronger ties within the community.
