Chicago Fire Department Special Duty – Blind Shaft Elevator Rescue 7/23/16

This is from Tim Olk:

On Saturday, July 23, 2016, the Chicago Fire Department's Tower Ladder 10 was dispatched to a high-rise building on North Halsted after reports of four people trapped in an elevator. After several attempts to reset the elevator failed, firefighters requested a blind shaft response, which involves accessing the elevator shaft directly without using the elevator car.

The responding units included:

  • Battalion 3
  • Tower Ladder 10
  • Squad 1
  • Squad 2
  • Special Operations Chief 515
  • An ambulance

The elevator was stuck between the second and third floors. Firefighters locked out the elevator system and set up on the fifth floor, working their way down to the fourth. A firefighter was lowered into the shaft and successfully located the four girls, who had been trapped for about two hours but were in good spirits. The team then carefully brought them to the fourth floor using ropes, where they were evaluated by paramedics and given medical attention.
