Xinjiang Institute of Physics found a new type of comprehensive excellent infrared non-linear optical crystal materials

On June 15, JACS published an article titled Na2ZnGe2S6: a new infrared nonlinear optical material with good balance between large second-harmonic generation response, published by the team of Researcher Pan Shi-Lie, a new photoelectric functional material laboratory of Xinjiang Institute of Physics and Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences and high laser damage threshold. The development of infrared solid-state lasers plays an important role in the military and civil fields. As the core device of infrared solid-state lasers, infrared nonlinear optical crystals play a key role. Although AgGaQ2 (Q = S, Se) and ZnGeP2 commercial crystals are available, they are not good due to the non-linearity coefficient and laser damage threshold Therefore, there is still a lack of infrared non-linear optical crystals with excellent performance. Therefore, it is still a hot topic in this field to continue exploring infrared non-linear optical crystals with large frequency, high damage threshold, wide transmission range and easy growth.

In recent years, Xinjiang Institute of Physics and Optoelectronics Functional Crystals Materials team has been devoted to the research of nonlinear optical crystals. Previous investigations revealed that the chalcogenide compounds have a wide range of infrared cut-off edges and become one of the important choices for exploring infrared materials. In the system, alkali metals, Which will increase the bandgap of the material and further increase the threshold of laser damage. In addition, the introduction of zinc with d10 electronic structure and germanium with easy formation of distorted tetrahedral elements can increase the probability of forming a non-centrosymmetric structure. Based on the above strategy, researchers use vacuum sealing tube for high-temperature solid-state reaction, successfully prepared a new type of infrared nonlinear optical crystal with excellent performance, Na2ZnGe2S6. The crystals crystallize in monoclinic non-Cc space group, and can exist stably in the air for a long time.

The researchers also found that the material has excellent performance with a wavelength band of 0.38 to 22 μm that covers two important atmospheric windows (3 to 5 μm and 8 to 12 μm), frequency doubling at 2.09 μm It is comparable to commercial AgGaS2 crystals, but its laser damage threshold is six times that of AgGaS2 crystals. Therefore, the compound well achieves the balance between high frequency multiplication and high laser damage threshold, and provides a good research idea for exploring excellent infrared nonlinear optical crystals in the future.

In addition, Pan Shi-Lie research group relies on the "CAS Key Laboratory of Functional Materials and Devices for Special Environment and Xinjiang Key Laboratory of Electronic Information Materials and Devices" has long been engaged in infrared / far infrared nonlinear optical crystals and has made a series of achievements. In this paper, Na2ZnGe2S6 (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2016, 138, 7422) reported in this paper is the second generation of Na2ZnGe2S6 (M = Si, Ge, Sn) (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2016, 55, 6713), a new type of infrared non-infrared (IR) detector that can achieve a large double frequency effect and a high laser damage threshold balance Linear optical crystal. The team will next study large-size single-crystal growth of reported materials to produce high-quality single crystals that can be tested on single-crystal devices.
