Of interest … the new tax law

A letter to the ChicagoSunTimes.com:

Twenty-eight years ago, I chose to become a Chicago firefighter because I believed in helping others in need. This career has given me financial stability, time to be with my family, and the chance to serve my community — something I’m truly grateful for.

Now, with two kids — one about to start college and the other a junior — I value the opportunities this job has provided even more. It’s not just about the paycheck; it’s about building a better future for my family.

When President Trump signed the new tax bill into law, many of us thought it would bring relief. The Republicans promised that it would lower taxes for everyday Americans. And at first, it seemed like good news — my monthly paycheck went up by about $175.

But when I met with my accountant this year, I was shocked. Instead of getting a $3,000 refund like I usually do, I’ll owe over $1,500 next year — on the same income. I asked him to double-check, but he came back with the same result. That’s when I realized: this wasn’t a tax cut — it was a bait-and-switch.

The GOP’s plan includes a cap on state and local tax deductions (SALT), which affects many middle-class families like mine. Other changes to deductions have made things worse. As a result, hardworking people are now paying more in taxes, not less.

This tax plan added nearly $1.5 trillion to the deficit while giving huge breaks to the wealthy and big corporations. According to the Tax Policy Center, 83% of the benefits go to the top 1% of earners. By limiting SALT deductions, the government is trying to cover the cost — but it’s working families who end up paying the price.

And it’s not just taxes. These cuts are being used as an excuse to slash funding for programs that help communities — including the one where I grew up and still serve as a firefighter. It’s heartbreaking to see resources being taken away from those who need them most.

The truth is, most middle-class taxpayers will see their taxes rise over the next decade. Millions will lose access to vital support programs. Republicans are hoping we won’t notice until after the 2018 midterms — but we’re not that easy to fool.

Working Americans aren’t asking for handouts. We pay our taxes, work hard, and risk our lives every day. We don’t want to see our money go to big corporations or the ultra-wealthy. We expect fairness — and we deserve it.

As a firefighter, I’ve always been ready to step up for my community. But I also believe that those in power should do their part too. They shouldn’t make working families pay for their tax breaks.

Thanks, Dan
